W.
Directed by: Oliver Stone
Starring: Josh Brolin
Following Frost/Nixon and Milk in a line of political biographies in the last months, comes Oliver Stone’s W. This film also follows Stones earlier work, Nixon staring Anthony Hopkins.
Unlike the brilliant Frost/Nixon and Milk, W. floated uncomfortably between comedy and biography. Odd Bushisums, recited outside of their original context, received a spatter of laughs. Overall, it is impossible to shake the feeling that this film follows too closely on the heels of the bush administrations exit. Perhaps in years to come, when the events are as old as those in Frost/Nixon and Milk, the film may find its place.
Josh Brolins performance was a highlight, while Jeffrey Wright’s portrayal of Colin Powell re-enforced my empathy for what seemed to be the only voice of reason in the last administration (Ignoring the case he built in support of the invasion of Iraq).
