Micro-blogging Disaster

My first foray into micro-blogging was a disaster.

I looked into what I saw as my options, predominantly twitter and jaiku, finally settling on pownce, lured in by the velvet rope like approach to membership. I was immediately seduced by the design and soon wrote about the social engineering at play. Sharing with my forcefully recruited friends how i enjoyed posting my status rather seeking theirs, gushing about the elegance and efficiency this approach.

“I’ll be here come by between then and then if you’re available!” … no one came. They where all too busy on facebook to even notice my loose invitation. It became clear that i had been tricked into a social networking site, sans network.

Despite this revelation I was content to treat the space as a micro-blog as I had first seen it. Posting links and messages reflecting the things which caught my imagination in that instance. It was effortless and the value of the post faded as quickly as my interest in the subject.

However, It wasn’t enough that I was content to treat pownce as a micro-blog. To the Facebookers it was just a shadow of their religion. Relentlessly insisting I join with each spare breath.

I am quite possibly a digital luddite, avoiding facebook for fear of its power. I may yet hear a compelling argument as to why facebook could be more useful to me then email, but until then … welcome to my blog.
